WHO WE ARE?

MEET THE FAMILIES IN OUR CHURCH!

THE REFORMED PRESBITERIAN CHURCH – IPC SIBIU

We want to be an urban church that reaches out especially to those outside the evangelical circle, especially students, young professionals and young families, but  we also  want to have mature people in the church who can provide balance and spiritual stability. At the moment the location where we meet as a church plant and where some of the families  live is Rusciori, a village 3 km away from Sibiu. In the early stages we think this is suitable, but we hope that in the future we will find a location in town that is easily accessible to other people, including students.

We are thankful to God for the wonderful way He has worked over the past year and the way He has brought us together to form this church. At the beginning of 2022, the dream of being part of a Presbyterian church was just that, a beautiful DREAM. But the Lord had His great and beautiful plans and we are grateful to Him. This is how God’s story with our church began.

For the last few years Madalin and Agnia prayed that the Lord would orchestrate things so that a Presbyterian church could be planted in Sibiu, there being no Reformed presence within a distance of about 200 km between Cluj Napoca and Brasov.

In 2021 Raul and Madalin met, then starting in 2022 they began to seriously discuss the plan to plant a church together and began to pray more seriously and intentionally in this direction. Then towards the end of 2022 Raul’s family moved to Rusciori near Sibiu to start this planting. At the beginning it was still not very clear who would lead this planting, but after several providential events and blockages and obstacles, God made it clear to Raul and Madalin as well as to the others in the planting group that the Lord was calling Raul to be the planter and to prepare himself to become a Teaching Elder.

Then a new stage in the realization of the planting plans was the visit of Sorin and Crina Rusu with their family to Sibiu, the discussion with Madalin and Aghi about the planting plans and their decision to move from Madrid to Sibiu to be part of it. Sorin has much experience in preaching and ministry in the Reformed Baptist Church in Madrid, but God had brought them as a family to Presbyterian convictions in recent years. He is the third leader of our group who is in the process of becoming a local elder.

Another important moment for our group was the joining of the First Families in the Sibiu area, who joined our group right from the beginning, even before Raul or Sorin had settled in Sibiu. The Munteanu family Ionica and Iulia with their 3 boys joined somewhere in August and somewhere in the same period also the Pricopi family Dragos and Silvana with their 2 boys decided to become part of our group.
Then a new family moved from Lupeni, Valea Jiului to Sibiu, the Dobos family Miriam and Mihai, who one month after their move, at the end of September joined our group.
The last family to join the group was the Hawkins family Miranda (USA) and Adalberto (Colombia) with their little boy, a family of Presbyterian missionaries who we found out had moved to the Sibiu area to lead a Youth for Christ ministry and after we managed to find them, they decided to join us and serve together.
So now we are 7 families, 14 adults and 15 children and together we enjoy every family, adult and child that God has placed in our church.
In the year since we started meeting and growing we have put a great emphasis on strengthening our relationships, getting to know each other better and becoming close friends in order to have unity, both theological and relational.
We had several retreats with the church, started meeting at least 3 times a week, eating together, celebrating birthdays and holidays together, in other words becoming a family united around Jesus and His Word, united by the bond of the Holy Spirit.

We are under the care of the IPC Demoniation, and Brother Liviu Lepadatu, pastor of the Church of Hope – IPC Timisoara, shepherds us, advises us and comes monthly to Sibiu, on which occasion we have the Lord’s Supper. This is a very brief presentation of the families in our church plant.

MEET OUR FUTURE ELDERS!

PROFIRE RAUL – IPC UNDER CARE – TEACHING ELDER

Profire Raul-Betuel is 26 years old and married to Claudia (28); together they have two daughters, Grace (17 months) and Elenor (newborn). He is the leader of our church and is currently in the process of ordination as a teaching elder in the IPC denomination. Below you can get to know him better through his testimony:

I was born and raised in a Christian family, my father having been involved in ministry since I was a child. He was for many years an elder in a Baptist church, and is now a planter and elder in an independent church in Galati. He is still involved in social ministry, being the president of a charitable foundation that provides care for orphans and families in difficult circumstances. As I said, I was brought up in the church, but was not a Christian until I was 19. All that time I lived a double life, being a wretched and depraved sinner when my father and church people weren’t around. But when they saw me I would pose as a Christian , even singing in the church worship band, to impress people in the church and my family. At 19, while at a Christian summer camp I was saved, by God’s grace and mercy, and my life has been changed ever since. I received spiritual life and understood, in fact I finally trusted in the Gospel and thus was set free from my addictions and vices. I began to love the God I once hated and to hate the sin I once loved. Early in my Christian life I was taken under the care of the elders of the church I attended in Iasi, where I was a law student. For three years, each of the three elders invested in me and encouraged me to serve, all the while making sure that I also grew and matured in my faith. I was involved in evangelism from the first year I became a Christian. After I married Claudia we had to move from Iași to Tg. Jiu due to various circumstances and here I was taken under the care of my brother-in-law Andrei Croitoru, who apprenticed me for two years. I felt the call to preach and serve in the church and for two years Andrei helped me to grow in this direction. After I became more and more Reformed and theological, in God’s providence I met Andrei in 2021 and in the summer of 2022 I understood that God was calling us to establish a Reformed Presbyterian church in Sibiu. We (Claudia and I) moved to Sibiu and started to meet initially in houses, at the beginning there were only 2 3 families. God added more families as the months went by and we began to organize as a church plant. I was born and raised in a Christian family, my father having been involved in ministry since I was a child. A few months ago I contacted the IPC to be taken under their authority and guidance as a church planter, and in early March 2023 I was taken under their care for ordination as a teaching elder. We are currently meeting for public worship, adult and children’s Sunday school and discipleship in Rusciori near Sibiu and are very grateful for what God in His grace and mercy is working in our church. Also Brother Liviu Lepădatu, from the Presbyterian Church of Hope in IPC Timisoara comes monthly and administers the sacraments.

POTOROACĂ MĂDĂLIN – IPC UNDER CARE – RULING ELDER

Potoroaca Mădălin is 39 years old and has been married to Agnia, 38, since 2008. God has blessed them with 4 children, Alethea (13 years old), Calvin (10 years old), Adamina (8 years old) and Edmund (1 year old). Mădălin comes from a disorganized family, having a youth characterized by addictions and sins. At 21 God saved and delivered him and since then he has started in different ways to serve and get involved in the lives of those around him.
In 2006 they planted their first house church in Petrosani, the town where they were both born. Unfortunately, after a few years in this church, for several personal and health reasons, they had to move to Cluj Napoca in 2013, and the church continued to meet for a while, then most of them either moved to other cities or joined other churches.

In Cluj they started a new Presbyterian church plant with Pastor Attila Szasz in 2013 and were members there until 2018, when they moved to Sibiu, where Mădălin was called to run a residential centre for people with various addictions. The church in Cluj is still operating today and growing. https://cluj.reformatprezbiterian.ro/

In Sibiu, ever since their move, the Lord had put it on their hearts to get involved in a Presbyterian church plant at some point, but they couldn’t do that at first, so after about 4 years in 2022 they began to pray much more intentionally for this plant and realized that it was the right time that God had set for it.

Madalin and Agnia founded Liberated by Truth, through which they provide biblical addiction counseling, hold Christian sex education seminars, organize conferences, counseling workshops, write and produce resources. They have also been involved in the homeschooling movement in Romania for many years, serving as national leaders and organizing annual camps and conferences. Both are passionate about the Gospel, individual and family discipleship, strengthening families through Christian education and biblical counselling. Agnia has many artistic gifts, writing poetry and prose, children’s books and translating Christian hymns.

SORIN RUSU – IPC UNDER CARE – RULING ELDER

Sorin Rusu is 30 years old, married to Crina since 2017 and God has blessed them with 3 children: Caleb (6 years old), Marco (4 years old) and Emma (2 years old). They both grew up in families of believers. Their parents moved to Spain when they were around 10 years old, where they lived until recently. They both returned to the Lord when they were around 18, during which time they also discovered the doctrines of grace. For the past 8 years they have been members of a Reformed Baptist church in Madrid where Sorin has also served through preaching for the past 4 years.

Lately God brought them to the Reformed convictions about the place of children in the covenant of grace and so they decided to move back to Romania, near Sibiu, to be part of our church plant in which Sorin wants to be actively involved with other brothers who share the same theological convictions and spiritual goals.

Sorin together with Crina serve in our community both through their hospitality but also through their specific gifts, Sorin through preaching and involvement in men’s discipleship and in the near future we want him to begin preparations to become a leading elder.

Raul, Sorin and Mădălin meet regularly for study, prayer and seeking God’s face and will in order to lead the newly planted church well. They are currently studying two books by Paul Tripp, Dangerous Calling and Lead. Their desire is to grow in the likeness of the Lord both in their personal lives and in the way they lead and shepherd.
